My Top Five Frozen Pizzas

Most of my friends know that I’m not very good at cooking. Luckily, I have a boyfriend who is an incredible cook. On the occasion that he’s not home, I have to fend for myself, and I end up eating a whole lot of instant noodles (more on that another time) or frozen pizzas. As such, I knew it was necessary for me to blog about the best frozen pizzas I can get my hot little hands on. Now I have yet to get through all the different frozen pizzas available in Sydney, but here’s a start. I’ll keep adding to the list as I try new ones.

1. Dr. Oetker Ristorante

Dr Oetker pizzas are a nostalgic thing for me, because I grew up on this stuff as a kid. I always loved the garlicky spinach pizza the most when I was a tiny child in Germany. Nowadays my favorite is the pepperoni pizza. The base is thin and crisp; the tomato sauce is very moreish; and even though there’s not even that much cheese on the pepperoni pizza – it weirdly works. Dr Oetker pizzas are the tastiest frozen pizzas out there, I say. But they’re also the most expensive, usually sitting somewhere between the $7.50 and $8.25 mark. I still have to try the mushroom and the bolognese. I’ll be looking out for those on my next grocery trip.

2. Dish’d

It’s a bit hit and miss with Dish’d frozen pizzas, but the mozzarella and pesto pizza is pretty great. The base is the closest you’ll get to what a fresh pizza base should be like. And it gets delivered to your door. Laziness at its finest! Perfect for someone like me who hates cooking and going to the shops.

Price: $6.95
Available flavors: Mozzarella and Pesto, Five Cheese, Spinach and Mascarpone, Mozzarella and Mushroom

3. Woolworths Select

When I try my first Woolworths Select pizza, I’m pleasantly surprised. Quattro Formaggi is decent in flavor, though hardly cheesy enough to be called ‘four cheeses’. And if you look in the ingredients list the majority is mozzarella. It’s also on the cheaper end of the spectrum, which is a plus.

4. McCain Ultra Thin Crust Singles

I have a bit of a thing with calling pizza ‘ultra thin’ because the phrase reminds me of sanitary pads, but otherwise this is an alright pizza. The best thing about it is definitely how small it is. If you’re eating solo, this is actually just the right amount if you have a side salad or a post-pizza dessert (I recommend ice cream). The box comes with two singles. I tried the Italiano, which was topped with mildly spicy pepperoni, red capsicum, mushrooms, and black olives. The Ultra Thin range is also available in regular sized pizzas with different flavors, but I’m yet to try those.

Price: around $7-8 for 2 in a box

5. Dr. Oetker Papa Giuseppi’s Bakehouse Crust

If you like deep pan pizza, this is the one for you. The thick crust is pillowy throughout and crispy on the bottom. My only qualm with the Papa Giuseppi’s BBQ meat lovers pizza is that the tomato sauce is on the sweet side.

The ones that didn’t make the cut

  • Aldi’s Casa Barelli woodfired pizza – I tried the mozzarella and rocket. The base isn’t great, the rocket is weirdly stuck to the pizza and the crust goes rock-hard in minutes. For $4 you’re better off with one of the other pizzas in that price range. I’m also not sure how it can be wood fired when it’s obviously going into your fan-forced oven at home.
  • Dish’d five cheese pizza – even though I highly rate the mozzarella & pesto, the five cheese version left me pretty disappointed. For a five cheese pizza, it actually lacked a bit of flavor.

  1. Nice post! As a kid I use to really be into packing on the cheese but nowadays I’m more for less cheese is better. More opportunity for the sauce and other ingredients to stand out. So I can see how your favourite one with less cheese works out so well 🙂


    1. Yes! Having said that I do love a lot of cheese if it’s buffalo mozzarella 🙂

    omg Dr Oetker Ristorante pizzas are the best! I’m not a pepperoni fan but my favourites are the funghi and quattro formaggi.

    Seriously you are my soulfoodsister. I have a secret deep love of frozen meals but have actually never roamed down to the pizza end. I’ll have to change that. (My version of this would be Top 5 Lean Cuisine Steam Frozen Meals, although I hate that they’re called “lean cuisine”.)

    i use todown a lot of frozen pizzas until i learnt how to make my own bases but occasionally i sitll go for Dr oteker, the mushroom one is my favourite followed by the spinach and cheese!
