There’s something inviting about parking yourself at the bar for a meal. It’s often more spontaneous (usually it’s a walk-in policy at most bars), it’s informal, and you’ll get to see some elaborate cocktail or food prep theatrics close up and personal. Generally, bar food means smaller plates that are ideal for sharing – and that’s exactly what I’m into.
We rock up at Continental Deli at around noon for a lazy brunch. I’ve been all up in the spritz business, so I order the house spritz (averna, tinned fruit syrup, soda). It’s a tad too sweet for me, but otherwise it’s refreshing. Eric goes for the Can-hattan (rye, sweet vermouth, bitters in a can). I don’t even bother taking a sip because I have a pretty strong aversion to rye. Unless it’s bread. Gimme all the rye bread please.
The meatball sandwich is assembled in front of us, finished with a healthy grating of Parmigiano-Reggiano on top. It’s moreish and generous. No doubt it’s a no-brainer for anyone who likes meatballs and bread.
But it’s the grilled mushroom with piquillo pepper, garlic & macadamia sauce, and herb salad that’s the underdog today. Perfectly balanced flavors with an awesome pickly taste. Were the mushrooms pickled after being grilled? I don’t know, but they were tasty as hell. Plus the bed of garlic and macadamia sauce adds a fab nuttiness and creaminess.
We end our meal with a melty soft truffle brillat savarin with crackers and pear. While it’s great, I do regret my choice of the truffle version because it tastes like fake truffle oil, not the real stuff. The OG without truffle probably would have been better. Next time.
